Very hospitable people and great food, this is what I can say about Jaro, Leyte.
I went for a vacation at the house of my wife’s grandmother last week which is in Jaro, Leyte wherein they were celebrating the feast of their patron. It’s an hour flight from Manila to Tacloban then another hour by jeepney from Tacloban to the town proper. I travelled without my wife, as she needs to take care of our little baby in Manila.
I gained a lot of weight during after staying there because of eating a lot:
- sisi – small clams placed in a jar full of vinegar
- kabog – wild bat cooked in coconut milk
- binagol – Sweetened shredded gabi tuber with coconut and condensed milk then cooked in coconut shells and wrapped in banana leaves
- bahalina – fresh coconut sap/toddy (a local wine)
- moron – rice flour cooked in coconut milk flavored with cocoa and wrapped in banana leaves
- native lechon – roasted native pig
We were also invited by the mayor of Jaro, Leyte – Hon. Rolando T. Celebre to visit his place for breakfast and for a tour of his RTC farm, not so sure but of my calculation, around 150-hectare land containing a poultry farm (around 400-500 game fowls), piggery (with 80 sow and huge number of piglets), coffee farm and more.
I have also visited Carigara, Leyte wherein we bought some fish in the public market.
It was a really wonderful place to stay at. Though you can’t find a Jollibee or a mall in there, you won’t be bored as there are lots of place to go to. If you don’t have a car, their primary means of transportation is the pedicab.
And here is my wife’s ancestral house and relatives:
[nggallery id="10"]I’ll be back in Jaro, Leyte by May of 2009, that time with my wife and our kids.

Jaro is simple and nice place to live in, i was born and raised in jaro, just plenty of good things to discover, most especial season to visit is the month of september, if you go there be prepared for some extra strenght for eating, yes eating, its siesta time and people their are very friendly that they will invite you to join them in their HANDAAN, what a fiesta we have their.. for you orest, if youd like to go there, i suggest that you go there by that season, for a place to crash on, i have heard that one resort their, a pool resort, have a nice and comfortable lodges for anyone to crash into, its just outside the town proper, bout 3 km’s. 5 minutes ride by PEDICAB, i just dont know the price for each stay but im sure its not that expensive… but if you want a much better hotel to live in, you can find it in the city itself, TACLOBAN city, a 1 HR drive north from jaro, ride a jeepney going tacloban and you can find a good place ti live in their.. and if ever you go there in jaro, dont forget to take some souviners…. so, jaro, our place, my place. i hope id be home before the summer starts.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME…Yeah, no doubt about it, our place/town is the best. I can tell you life in Jaro is the kind of life you would wish you could have all life long, kinda dream you would’nt want to be over. an tuba nga bahal ug kuwentuhan (fellowshipping) diyan sa yards or sa tabi ng kalsada at magdamagang inuman, if you well; laid-back kind of life, no worries about time wasted. The fresh water, I mean fresh from the spring in Jaro, no after taste, no Chlorine, just sweet water direct from the natural fountain in PIRAON spring. Wow, what about sabong (cockfight/derby)sa galyera. Well, so much said. I’m just proud about my town close to bragging, but its true. Please, if you have time and see what I’m talking about. I invite you to visit Jaro, Leyte and see it for yourself.Bangin siguro in 2010, God willing I may be home for another visit and enjoy life that I missed. I’ve been to many corners of the world, but again there’s no place like HOME.
jaro.. a town of no return?!! it is a big no!! no!!
jaro is definitely a place you will be agog to return to..
go there and you will know what i am talking about!!
bakit na traumatize ka ba?o baka naman sosi ka lang masyado i cant possibly imagine someone to have such bad impression spend a little more time there and you’ll find out the warm people,………baka naman isang araw ka lang don.then again it’s ur opinion i may not agree with it pero stupid comment pa rin…..
uhmm.. no i have been in jaro for almost 15 years.. my father is purely jaronian.. i have just come up kasi with this ‘a place of no return’ stuff when one of my classmate opened me this title.. jaro is indeed a nice place.. no place like home, aka nga.. hehe!!
tama!!! ate alva(gknhs gud)
i really miss my hometown i like to hang out and chill with my friends, family.. i hope on 2011 me and my husband have a vacation and take same time off from work. i really like those picture,

ito pa,, mga ancestral houses
magulo parin ang palengke dun,kc 2 parin at dun parin napunta yung mga tao sa lumang palengke.
i consider jaro as my second home.been there five times 1982,1986.1989,1991 and most recently in 2004(during fiesta)i had the best times of my life there i wish i could go there often………i miss the fresh air ung mga fresh na seafood at anything na ginataan especially langka also ung ilog ewan ko lang kung malinis pa rin di ko maintindihan bakit ang mga tao umaalis punta ng manila ang sarap ng buhay don.sana in the future sa jaro na lang ako titira……fond memories talaga lalo na ung year 1986 month of may halos lahat ng sayawan dinadayo namin ladies piso ang tawag don pag gusto mo makisayaw bayad ka ng piso o kung special request group of 12 tigpipiso din………
jaro is a great place… about the old market stuff.. the mayor kasi is into too much politicking… he doesnt want to maximize the use of the new market coz it was a project of the good former mayor bom.. hehehe…
gusto ko dalaw jan sa jaro coz my RMG bf assinged there..
nice pics.. surprised to see that your GF’s ancestral house is a stone’s throw away from our house…
Jaro? No place like home, as what a lot of people have already said. Just seeing those pictures will surely make one nostalgic.
See you peeps around. Ü
hi guys good and thanks to see those pictures ..i’m totally homesick here.
hi guys thanks for those pictures na homesick tuloy ako.. hu hu hu
Hi hatanan nga mga taga-jaro, medyo hirayo na masyado an akon batch, 1977 from notre dame of jaro, (mga bata pa kamo) , but i still want to post a message here. Una nalipay ako nga may-ada iru-istorya han mga igkasi ko bisaya labi na nga mga taga-jaro. (English naman kita) I have very good memories of Jaro; i spent practically all my teenage years in jaro and i graduated in notre dame. Even when i was already in college i still spent my vacation in Jaro trading together with my cousins. The picture of the river brings so much fond memories, that’s where i learned to swim. Jaro to me is equivalent to happy fiestas in september, flores de mayo at the end of May, market day every sunday and countless “barakasyon” during summertime. I always long to go back there and meet old friends, maybe next year if i can have a leave. . . – kumusta to my friends arlene, marlene, carmen, mende and rhigo
dako it problemahon hit jaro in term of environment factor……
1 it kabukiran ,,nagtikang tikang na kakalbo…(walng ginagawa un mga local opisyal in regard with this)
2.an salog guti nla tubig….agi hit kadamo nga destruction nga nahitabo ngan waray paghunong pagpinan nguha hin bras ngan bato…
3..an pira-on waray maintenance,,di na masara it tubig,,,
damo pa gad ini eda kun makadi kamo jaro,,kia nla nyo kun ano ba gud..txn
hallo sa mga taga Jaro, specailly sa batch 1991 sa Notre Dame,hi to Marilyn Pontejos and Gerlie Dula, miss kna kayo mga Day,pagkatapos la han graduation naton ha NDJ waray na kita pag kiri kirita….

may ada la ako suggestion kon magkaka urusa kita.damo it tourist spot ha aton
Surfing would be impossible Noel… we’re in the middle of Leyte. Even a river cruise would also be a little bit unlikely kay shallow man it at mga salog. There was this Hot Springs far out that I remember… Went there once. Harayo but the trip and the place itself was worth it.
Regarding politics. Let’s see.
I prefer not to meddle with it. Bahala na ito hira.
Ecotourism will be…
hi…good day..i am a 5th year BS MECHANICAL ENGINEERING student from EASTERN VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY. As a requirement for our course, we are required to make a feasibility study…we’ve chosen the topic about biogas and the RTC farm is the best candidate for our feasibility study…there, we are sure to find sufficient source of pig manure which is a very important ingredient in making biogas..now we are in the process of making our digester design…now we are making researches and making ways also to contact the RTC farm..if ever you know the contact number or the e_mail address of the farm…we will be very thankfull to to have it…here’s my e_add….p_k_m_ann_jay@yahoo.com.ph..thank you and more power..
@jayson
you might consider going to Jaro yourself for this “study” of yours. Talking about your study here wont do you any good. People seldom visit this site.
@bebot
please, no politics.

Hello,
I am compiling a family history book on the Salvatierra Family, and searching for descendants of this family, including those families that have intermarried such as, Ortega, Horca, Romualdez, etc.
My great-grandfather was Catalino Salvatierra born in 1888, Jaro, Leyte; also, his father, Eulalio Salvatierra, also born in Jaro. Our ancestors were catholic missionaries from Spain. There’s are also Nicholas Salvatierra and Miguel Salvatierra whose descendants I would like to contact regarding this family. Thanks so much,
Susan A. Craven
